The primary purpose of the KWCT Steering Committee (SC) is to provide continuity for Kirtland’s Warbler conservation programs by preserving institutional knowledge and serving as a resource collective for new and expanding members of the KWCT community. The SC will ensure that the KWCT uses an Adaptive Management approach that encourages early collaboration between research, management, education, and outreach. The SC is also charged with exploring opportunities to expand partnerships, collaborating to seek funding for priority conservation actions, supporting and integrating subcommittee activities, tracking accomplishments, and sustaining public support for the KWCT mission.

Managers typically develop Kirtland’s warbler breeding habitat by harvesting and regenerating large stands of jack pine. Harvested areas are then reforested to plant seedlings or encourage natural regeneration. Small openings are incorporated into the reforested areas in an opposing wave or other pattern to provide habitat diversity.
The Breeding Range Subcommittee is responsible for implementing priority actions identified in The Kirtland’s Warbler Breeding Range Conservation Plan (2015). In addition, this group is focusing on:

The Non-breeding Range Subcommittee is currently working to determine where (stopover and wintering sites) and when the Kirtland’s Warbler may be threatened or limited during the non-breeding season and to implement actions to abate threats to the population as needed. Efforts are underway to develop a Non-breeding Range Conservation Plan and to prioritize activities around conservation planning, research, habitat protection/conservation, habitat management, outreach, building capacity, policy engagement, and fundraising.

The Human Dimensions and Capacity Building Subcommittee is working in close coordination with the Breeding and Non-breeding Range Subcommittees to ensure that outreach and engagement work is enacted to increase public understanding, engagement, and support for on-the-ground activities, announcement of key decisions, or adoption of policy.
